Space X Launch

It didn’t get rained out this time! It was really cool to see history unfolding in real time yesterday. Not only did the launch of the Falcon 9 go well, the booster returned to earth as planned and landed successfully on the ocean-based landing pad. Pretty slick compared to how the old rockets and fuels tanks of the shuttle came back to earth. I checked in on them a few minutes ago and watched the Dragon capsule do their manual test maneuvers and then dock with the ISS. That was awesome! I love space stuff.

I’ve been wrestling with my story idea for days. Bit and pieces have emerged as I’ve tried to brainstorm using Q&A, but key elements have been missing, especially how the main character fits into the story as a whole. It felt as if my imagination randomly picked a character out of bucket and then threw them into an unrelated situation which has nothing to do with them. Yeah, I’ve been banging my head against my desk. How did you know? I went to bed frustrated because I wasn’t getting anywhere. 1am rolls around and I wake up with a little heartburn but as I laid back down, the next big piece pops into my head. More pieces continued to come to me as I furiously scribbled stuff down in the dark. It’s funny how that works.

So where does that put me? I now know why my main character is there and why he’s needed. I also know more about my antagonist and the method to his machinations. Also gained some tidbits about side characters that I was also lost on. I even got the first line of the story last night. That’s a really good sign. I still have plenty of stuff yet to work out, but I like I might be over that big hurdle that’s been tripping me up. I’m so ready to get back into writing stage but I can’t rush it.

Today was one of those days where my brain is empty. There’s nothing bubbling up that I’m thinking about, outside of a story question that I can’t seem to answer. Sadly, it’s one of those questions that are crucial to the story. I’ll keep noodling on it. Why am I one of those writers that come up with the characters first instead of a story plot? Because my subconscious likes to be difficult!

It seems our hummingbird feeder has finally caught on. A little while back, a hummingbird kept coming to my office window to eat bugs that got caught in a spiderweb. It visited enough that I mentioned it to my wife, and we decided to get it a hummingbird feeder. And wouldn’t you know it, the hummingbird ignored our feeder! But in the last week, we’ve had several different hummingbirds find it and feed. Now they’re showing up more and more. So now in addition to seeing my regular chipmunk buddy outside, I get to see the hummingbirds visit.

That’s not to say that’s our only visitors. We’ve got plenty of squirrels, doves and cardinals that drop by on a regular basis. I’m pretty sure that’s because we put birdseed and corn out. That’s something my son enjoys doing. He’s always checking to see if they need more. I guess you could say our yard is teaming with wildlife. Heck, just the other day we saw a deer in the backyard. That’s not something I typically imagine seeing in an urban environment.

I’m glad they’re out there though. It’s a reminder that we still live in nature, whether we realize it or not. There’s both music and beauty in the world around us and we can experience it if we merely look outside our window every so often.

All Around Rusty

I’m a tad bit rusty cooking food but so far, no blunders. Made sausage balls for lunch yesterday. It’s hard to mess that up though, considering it only has 3 ingredients. That’s more of a fall or winter holiday food but meh, I wanted to make it. For yesterday’s dinner, I did a pan grilled chicken with Italian oven fries. It was Memorial Day-ish in nature. Also got to have some ice-cold watermelon. Now that was delicious!

Did you see the crowds at the beaches and parks yesterday? Holy crap! Lots of people, no social distancing, and no masks. Folks are clearly in the fuck it stage if I ever saw it. They better not screw it up for the rest of us trying to be good. People were doing fireworks last night. I found that to be a little odd, since Memorial Day isn’t a celebration but a day of remembrance. I guess folks are looking for any reason to party these days.

Caught the first episode of this season’s Titan games last night. I’m glad to see they refreshed the course this year and made it harder. My wife and I enjoyed it. I can’t say it’s one of those shows that I’ll make sure to watch every week but if it’s on and I don’t have things to do, I’ll tune in. There’s very few shows these days I make sure to see. TV doesn’t have the same joy as it used to.

I realize I haven’t said anything about my writing lately. I wrote the first chapter of an old idea of mine and realized that I had no idea where it’s supposed to go. That’s because I don’t know what the story is about yet. I know it’s a novel length urban fantasy dealing with vampires and ghosts but beyond that, the crystal ball is hazy. I need to flesh the story out but its harder than I remember. Feels like I’m having to learn how to ride a bike all over again. Things are percolating and I’m asking questions. This part takes time and I can’t rush the process. Eventually I’ll have to turn all my notes into an outline but I’m not there yet. Brainstorming is a weird process. Slowly but surely, it’ll come together.

I guess I’m just rusty all around!
