Today I’m sure there will be a lot of people grilling out, spending time with family, or maybe even going to the beach. I think it’s important for all of us to take a moment and consider why we have this holiday in the first place.
Even before our country was founded, there were those who laid down their lives so that it could be created. Our country is 244 years old and we’re still just as imperfect as the day it was created. We’ve always been a strange mix of beliefs, cultures, morals, and dreams. Those things divide us as much as they bring us together. And yet for all our flaws, there have always been people who’ve decided to serve our country.
We might not have always agreed with the mission they were given, but we’ve supported them. Many who’ve put on the uniform have gone to war and have come back changed if they were lucky enough to come back at all. I can’t even imagine all the things they’ve seen, heard, or done. Freedom has a price and they’ve paid it for us. They deserve our respect and our thanks.
