Life isn’t so simple these days, as much as we wish it were. Maybe that’s one of the reasons we like to look back and think of times past. I’ve been watching a lot of neo-Victorian and 1950’s lifestyle videos lately. There’s a quaint charm in revisiting those lifestyles but that’s because there’s a sense of rosiness about them. We see the good and conveniently forget about the bad.
I was recently doing the same while thinking about my pre-smartphone days. It was a time when a phone was a phone and texting really hadn’t caught on yet. I remember working in the Philippines and needing to get a local phone so I could call my wife easier. Back then I went through a lot of calling cards! Some of the agents took me to a local mall and I found a phone that I absolutely loved the look of, a Sony Erricson z200.
It was unlike any phone I’d ever seen in the States. I bought an unlocked version so I could use it there in the Philippines and anywhere in the world I went next, including home. I fell in love with that phone and used it for years afterwards, even after my travels ended. I still think of it fondly, but the truth is, it doesn’t hold a candle to the smartphone I have today. The most advanced feature on it was that it could run Java games. It was horrible at texting as it used a number pad. I learned how to text pretty fast on it after a while because unlike in the States, texting was the primary method folks communicated over there. No one hardly called anyone anymore.
One of the things I miss most, next to the aesthetic of the device, was my old ringtone called “Ice Gold”. Sadly, my phone stopped working long ago and no one had that ringtone as far as I could fine because it was made for that series of phones. I decided to search for it again recently and I saw that there were others looking for it too. I wasn’t the only one! To my surprise, I found a copy of the ringtone that someone had taken off a functioning device. It was hidden on some obscure website, but I finally got my hands on it. You can probably guess what the ringtone is on my smartphone now, Ice Gold!
It’s small things like that that make me happy. I can’t believe I found it. I still think of my z200 now and then, but my iPhone SE isn’t so bad in comparison. If only there was a way to have the z200 aesthetic with all the bells and whistles of the iPhone. I’m sorry but there’s nothing sexy about a glass rectangle and that’s all phones are these days. We’ve lost something along the way in our march for progress. We need to be creative again and perhaps look back at the past. Maybe that rosiness isn’t always a bad thing. It can inspire us to bring life and color into what we have today. Afterall, it’s all wibbly wobbly timey wimey isn’t it?
