Music: (from the overhead loudspeaker) Parcels – “Lightenup”
Today for lunch I managed to run away to the Starbucks near my office for the first time since early November. It’s crazy to think it’s been that long since I’ve been there considering it used to be my go-to place in previous years for my afternoon writing sessions. The staff has completely changed, and the layout has been moved around since I was here last. Does that make it a new Starbucks? Maybe.
The weight loss is going well. I’ve already lost 3 pounds. It’s been strange going back to calorie counting after not doing it for months on end. I find my memory of how many calories are in different foods to be way off the mark. Out of sight, out of mind, I guess. I’ll relearn it in time.
I didn’t realize how easy it was to forget proper portion sizes, especially when going out to eat. Even more so, the common combo meals on the menu boards that people order from are way over the portion sizes we should have. For just a burger, fries and a drink, the calories can be anywhere from 700 up to 1200, depending on the sandwich and drink you get. And that’s assuming you didn’t upsize it or order any kind of dessert.
Frankly, it’s pretty easy to eat most, if not all, your recommended daily calories in one sitting. No wonder obesity in the United States is off the charts. It’s been a jarring adjustment to return to proper portion sizes, but it pays off. Knowledge is power.
I’m working on getting my ducks in a row so I can go on vacation without having a panic attack about things at work. It’s proving to be difficult, but hey, nothing is ever easy. On the upside, our new mattresses arrived yesterday. There was a snafu about them taking away our old mattresses and box springs, but it’s okay. We’ll likely just contact the city and have them haul the old stuff away. It’s times like this where I miss us having a truck. Previously we would have just thrown them in the back and hauled them off ourselves. Oh well. I also got to talk to my brother for the first time in months. I’m really horrible at keeping in touch with people. It’s one of the many things that I need to fix about myself.
Well, time to head back to work. Later.
