Music: Simple Minds – “Don’t You Forget About Me”
“From days of long ago, from uncharted regions of the universe, comes a legend. The legend of Voltron: Defender of the Universe. A mighty robot, loved by good, feared by evil. As Voltron’s legend grew, peace settled across the galaxy. On Planet Earth, a Galaxy Alliance was formed. Together with the good planets of the Solar System, they maintained peace throughout the universe until a new horrible menace threatened the galaxy. Voltron was needed once more. This is the story of the super force of space explorers. Specially trained and sent by the alliance to bring back, Voltron: Defender of the Universe.”
Somehow, I can’t read that intro without hearing the actual version in my head, complete with music.
When I was a kid, cartoons only came on during Saturday mornings or for that brief period after school. I loved my cartoons! The lineup shifted a bit through the years but ultimately consisted of ThunderCats, He-Man, Duck Tales, Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers and Voltron. Even today I couldn’t pick my favorite out of the bunch, but I will say that Voltron held a special place in my heart.
When LEGO announced they’d make a Voltron set, I knew I’d get one no matter the cost. I finally got around to build the set recently, and I have to say it ranks up there with my favorite builds of all time. It took a number of hours over the course of a few days to build it, but it was well worth the time. Like the cartoon, once the lions were built, they assembled together to form Voltron. It was freaking cool.
This is one of those builds that brings out my inner nerd as much as it does the nostalgia for days gone by. I wish more sets did that.
