Music: Din of the Food Court
Location: Lenox Mall Food Court
It’s been a busy day at work, and I’m under the gun to get things done at the same time. A lot of folks have been feeling that same way by the looks on co-workers’ faces. To boost morale, they’re doing a March Madness event at the office, complete with loud music and food. We work in a workplace 2020 type environment where the floor is mostly a low walled cubicle farm where noises are easily heard, even from those next to you. The music and loudspeaker announcements have been drowning out my conference calls. Even though they had free food, I decided to skip it in lieu of escaping to the mall for lunch. There’s a roar here as well, but it’s more like white noise so I can hear myself think. Apparently, everyone and their cousins decided to come to the mall too. The place is busy as all get out.
I’ve been frequenting the Farmer’s Basket lately as a quick place to grab a bite. One of the ladies behind the counter has learned what I like. She waved at me today when I stepped up to the back of the line. Sometimes she dishes up the food for customers and other times she’s running around refilling the food items behind the line. Today she was a food runner, and even though there was a line of folks ahead of me, she waved me up to the side and plated my food for me so that I didn’t have to wait on the others. That was super sweet of her. We exchanged pleasantries like we’ve begun to do lately and then went on about our normal routine, me paying for my food and her refilling the food for the counter line.
I feel bad that I’ve never asked her what her name was or where she’s from. She has a big smile, and her facial features strike me as Filipina. I’m tempted to say “Salamat Po” the next time she helps me to see if I’m right. That’s “Thank you” in Tagalog, one of the main languages spoken in the Philippines. It makes me wonder what she’ll say. I don’t recall a lot of the language from my travels there, but maybe it’s enough to bring her a smile.
On a side note, I got another story rejection letter today.
